It’s not exactly unique to the Inland Empire, but people love Famous Dave’s because it’s a smattering of the slow-smoked Southern ‘cue in one boppin’ joint. Famous Dave is Dave Anderson, a barbecue aficionado and failed/resurrected business man from Chicago who opened this first Not Yet Famous Dave’s shack in the village of Hayward, Wisconsin in 1994. His ribs were so good, Dave was serving up to a thousand finger-sucking peeps a night and needed to expand, first to Minneapolis—and now everywhere. Besides having Fat Tire on tap—which surprisingly didn’t win Best Micro, even though New Belgium is Fort Collins-based and thereby imminently Inland Empire—there’s those sweetwater catfish fingers and Georgia Chopped pork, the Texas Manhandler (thinly sliced hot links and brisket topped with “hell-fire” pickles) and that Devil’s Spit Burger. The sounds of Zydeco accompany the dishes. Drunkin’ Apples accompany the wheel chair. Bibs required. (Braxton Leeds)
