Best Place to Crack a Spine

Used bookstores are a dying breed. Those in Riverside have mostly fallen by the wayside, save for Downtowne Books, a quaint and homey retreat tucked away in a mysterious alley at the East end of the Mission Inn arcade. Cruising through the dusty stacks is like a trip back to the libraries of old. Yet unearthing the rare, out-of-print tome—for example, Pete Dexter’s God’s Pocket for $5—is why Downtowne Books is still an adventure.  (Nancy Powell)
