Sick Puppies

AC/DC might have received the lion’s share of attention this year, but Sick Puppies, another (much younger) rock band from Sydney, also continued to build momentum and prick up people’s ears. Formed in the late ’90s, they first gained international attention in 2006 when power ballad “All the Same” accompanied a clip that became a YouTube sensation and led to the Free Hugs Campaign. Vocalist Shimon Moore had filmed his friend and fellow Aussie Juan Mann giving free hugs in a hometown mall. After the trio relocated to LA to record major label bow Dressed Up as Life, the music and footage was combined, eventually streaming more than 30 million times. Meanwhile, the track went top 10 on Modern Rock radio and got played to death on X103.9 FM (“My World” and “What Are You Looking For” followed suit). The hard-hitting, bleak album is frequently leavened with melodic elements that make Moore’s soul baring lyrics about stalkers (“Deliverance") and poor parental guidance (“Asshole Father”) easier to digest. Also on the bill for X103.9’s first major concert event in ages: platinum-selling SoCal post-grunge band Hoobastank, who are best known for hits like “The Reason,” “Crawling in the Dark” and “Running Away” and will likely preview tunes from upcoming fourth release “Fornever”; shrewd St. Louis alt-pop group Ludo (“Love Me Dead” from You’re Awful, I Love You received a significant amount of spins); massively popular OC metalcore band Atreyu (seen on the Projekt Revolution and Taste of Chaos tours); LA indie rock up-and-comers Drive A. (George A. Paul)

Very Merry Xmas Party with Sick Puppies, Atreyu, Hoobastank, Ludo, Drive A at Coussoulis Arena, Cal State San Bernardino, 5500 University Parkway, San Bernardino, (909) 537-7360; or Sat., Dec. 20, 7PM, $25
