Dear IE Weekly and Roberto C. Hernandez,

Thank you for the article “A Rainbow in the Dark” [Dec. 4, iss. 35]. My name Is Albert. I am 23 years old and a proud gay man. This whole Prop 8 thing is BS. It’s discriminating and segregating towards me as well as thousands of loving gay and lesbian human beings. We don’t want “domestic partnership,” we want to get married and be treated equally. What part of that don’t they understand?

I am hurt and angered that our California state (and our country for that matter), as well as our fellow citizens would allow the Constitution to be ignored and written over. Does it not say in the 14th Amendment that “no state shall deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws”? Also, Thomas Jefferson declares in our Declaration of Independence that “all men are created equal.” This proposition takes away my right—and thousands of others rights—that our Constitution guarantees. We need to overturn this proposition. We need to erase discrimination and segregation in our Constitution. We all need to love and accept each other for who we are and not what we are, regardless of our beliefs—because we are all human beings made equal by God.

I will not give up and I will keep fighting for my rights and equality. We as a gay and lesbian community are going through our civil rights movement just as the African-Americans did in the ’50s. We will get our way, whether it be tomorrow, next week, next month, next year or years to come, one way or another.

–Albert Ray D’Orazio, Rancho Cucamonga

Albert,

Here’s hoping for tomorrow but bracing for eternity, right there with you!
