Billy Joel opens The Show

Despite a tanking economy and sky high unemployment rate in California, a local Indian casino decided to roll the dice and add a new $76 million entertainment venue to its property.
The Show at Agua Caliente Casino Resort and Spa in Rancho Mirage will hold its Grand Opening on Feb. 12 with a sold out performance by Billy Joel.
“Our top priority in building The Show was to create an entertainment experience like no other,” David Fendrick, COO for the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla, said in a prepared statement. “It’s one thing to build a top-notch facility, but it won’t mean anything if you don’t put world-class entertainers on the stage. We’re doing both.”

Landing Joel for a rare, intimate Inland area gig—upcoming SoCal dates with Elton John are at arenas—was quite a coup. The Piano Man had a busy 2008 with the 30th Anniversary deluxe reissue of his career-defining The Stranger album, all-star final concerts at New York’s Shea Stadium and Barack Obama campaign stops alongside Bruce Springsteen.

With a 2,000 seat-capacity, The Show provides a contrast to other IE casino rooms like Fantasy Springs Events Center in Indio (4,500), San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino’s Yuhaviatam Room in Highland (2,500) and Pechanga Theatre in Temecula (1,200).

In addition to Joel, Agua Caliente has lined up matchbox 20 (Feb. 13) and Martina McBride (Feb. 14) during the first weekend. Other music performers include: Chicago (Feb. 20), Tony Bennett (March 6), Puddle of Mudd (March 7), the Moody Blues (March 27), Melissa Etheridge (April 2) and Trace Adkins (April 3). Comedians Lisa Lampanelli (May 15), Jay Leno (June 12) and Frank Caliendo (July 17) round out the schedule.
