Kick out the Jam!

Posted April 9, 2009 in

It doesn’t get much hotter than the streets of downtown Riverside on a Saturday. By mid-spring, the inhabitants of this historic community might as well be called the people of the sun. And this weekend, the city and local businesses (Mario’s Place, Lake Alice Trading Co., Worthington’s Tavern, The Menagerie, Delights & Invites and Mission Tobacco Lounge) are sponsoring an event that will turn up the heat even more, figuratively speaking.

The inaugural Downtown Street Jam, kicking off this Saturday, offers a potent mixture of hometown sound. Spearheaded by revered Riverside headliners Voodoo Glow Skulls, the live music showcase pulls together an all-day mix of ska, Latin, soul, reggae and a dash of punk using the city as a backdrop to bring it all together. Often considered one of the biggest bands to stay true to its IE roots, the furious energy of VGS is sure to stir up a herd of diehard fans. This free event (yes, FREE!) also includes music by local crowd pleasers The Skeletones, The Debonaires, Latin Soul Connection and A Little on the Side. Picture the intersection of Orange and Ninth swirled in the color and culture of local musicians bringing the downtown to life as drum beats echo through the streets chased by sharp notes of brass.

When you’re not thrashing, bouncing or shaking your hips, it wouldn’t hurt for the out-of-towners in the audience to look around and discover the shops, galleries and local culture the city has to offer. Designed as a family-friendly community event on the second Saturday of every month, the jam could be the only downtown tradition worth getting sunburned for. (Nate Jackson)
