Tweenage sensation Disney’s High School Musical visits the IE to rouse theater audiences at the Candlelight Pavilion. The musical is based on the wildly successful 2006 Disney Channel movie that launched the HSM film franchise. Often described as the modern, cleaner version of Grease, HSM lead characters Troy Bolton (Derek Klena) and Gabriella Montez (Courtney Cheatham) meet and become smitten during winter break. Troy is the star basketball player and Gabriella is a math wiz, but they find they have a mutual talent and love for singing and both secretly want to try out for the school musical. The show’s conflict comes from the pressure of letting down their respective cliques by auditioning and, of course, dealing with the ever present “mean girl” on campus. Candlelight’s production has tons going for it; great vocal talents, costumes and sets, as well as exciting music and choreography. Give this high-energy cast a less sappy script and it would truly be a spectacle to behold (It’s not their fault—it’s Disney)! Siblings Kristen and Jordan Lamoureux portray Sharpay and Ryan Evans (also siblings!), the drama club queen and king, respectively, who will go to any lengths to keep Troy and Gabriella out of the musical. Then there’s Adam Trent who does double-duty as James and an ensemble member—and steals the scene whenever he’s onstage (which is often). Don’t expect Shakespeare or even Andrew Lloyd Webber, but for a fun, high energy evening, get a dose of Disney.
