When it comes to death metal bands practicing what they preach (wow, is that an un-apt metaphor), it doesn’t get any death metal-ier than Deicide. The band’s repeatedly used images of Jesus and the Crucifixion (1995’s Once Upon a Cross and 2004’s Scars of the Crucifix) in ways your friendly neighborhood priest/pastor would certainly get his vestments in a bunch over. Not evil enough for ya? They’ve also got a song called “F—Your God.” Still not evil enough for you? OK, how’s this: Deicide frontman Glen Benton has repeatedly branded an inverted cross on his forehead at least a dozen times over the years. Now that’s commitment to Ol‘ Scratch. And the band’s no fly-by-night act in the devil rock scene, having formed 22 years ago and—for you number crunchers—the band’s first two albums (Deicide and Legion) are ranked as the second and third highest selling death metal albums since they started keeping track of this (actually, ever since SoundScan began chronicling record sales around 1991). The group’s been banned from several countries and venues so you may want to get your tix ahead of time and bring a severed goat head if you’ve got one handy. Better yet, bring one for a friend.
