Say Anything (20th Anniversary Edition)

Posted November 25, 2009 in The Small Screen

Just like legendary teen flicks Sixteen Candles, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and the Breakfast Club, Cameron Crowe’s late-’80s directorial debut has a cult following – but this one is mostly made up of guys, sensitive guys! Yes, a perennial favorite for all those regular, sweet, normal-looking dudes who longed to love pretty girls who were not total bitches, Say Anything is so beloved that most of its admirers completely overlook the exceptionally creepy father-daughter love story at the center of this tale. Lloyd Dobbler (John Cusack) really is sweet, pathetic, but sweet; Diane Court (Ione Skye) is pretty and totally clueless about real human interaction. He’s a wannabe kickboxer, she’s an enigmatic valedictorian, and the summer after graduation they fall in love like two naïve, vulnerable puppy dogs. Lloyd’s gal pal Corey (a hilarious Lili Taylor) fortunately adds a comic angle (there’s little better than watching her sing one of the 65 songs she’s written for her ex, Joe), and the rest of the cast is speckled with soon-to-be famous celebs like Jeremy Piven and Chynna Phillips. This special edition DVD also includes featurettes, deleted and alternate scenes, and commentary by the principle actors making it a perfect gift for that thoughtful guy in your life, because you really don’t want him to change into a macho shithead. Really, you don’t.
