Dawn of the Bread

It’s difficult to find small-town charm in a city-riddled state like California—at least its southern portion—but every once in a while, in the nooks and crannies, there’s a local business that just captures that feel you get watching Gilmore Girls or while listening to John Mellencamp: warm and homey with a slice of pie.

The Local Baker and Cafe, situated in downtown Upland, is one of those places.

The little shop/restaurant with its old-town exterior, fitting for any downtown Upland storefront, invites you in and quickly gives you that at home feeling that makes you understand why Lorelai never wanted to leave Stars Hallow.

The Local Baker and Café—established in 1895!—is exactly what it sounds like: a local bakery and café. Serving up the traditional small-town bakery delights—breads, cookies, cupcakes, doughnuts—along with coffee, This place also offers an array of dishes fitting for a quick grab-and-go breakfast, lunch with friends and co-workers or, surprisingly, a quiet dinner.

At first the eclectic display of breads and sweets is a little overwhelming, but in a good way, like how a kid feels in a candy store: there’s so much to choose from.

Luckily, the friendly staff is always prepared to offer some suggestions. For breakfast, a quick ham and cheese croissant or bear claw are great choices on the go. If you’re not a breakfast-type person, The Local Baker and Cafe has some great lunch choices; from turkey to roast beef sandwiches made to your liking to soups and entrée salads complete with grilled chicken breast to be enjoyed inside or on the patio. And if you’re on a time-limited lunch break, rest assured, the staff is quick and your food arrives in a timely manner.

While all this seems pretty typical of any eatery or food purveyor, The Local Baker and Cafe steps outside of the box by serving up pizza and spaghetti dinners with a smile even while the staff is preparing to close shop. If you happen to arrive a little too late but are hungry for a hot meal, this local business won’t turn you away.

Even though the heavy foods, like the pizza, may be a little greasy, every dish, from breakfast to dinner, comes at a great price with most falling under $10.

And while the meal choices are filling, no bakery is complete without it’s offerings of breads and desserts; whether traditional, non-traditional or traditional with a non-traditional twist, this bakery is stocked. And the best part is that the desserts are jumbo-sized: From “giant ears” and large-sized cookies to the mountain of chocolate that is the “Rocky Road”—despite wanting to try all of them—one dessert may be enough. But, if your sweet tooth begs and you can’t resist, just order some to go á la Gilmore-style.
