There are the bands whose song lyrics read like cryptic, esoteric messages, full of incomprehensible prose and indecipherable babble, requiring a mental machete of sorts to clear a meager path towards understanding and a semblance of clarity.

And then there are bands like Subvert, who appear to make resoundingly strong, understandable statements in song. These subtle (and not-so-subtle) calls to action are weaved through an edgy ska-punk affair, further buttressing an already focused effort. After all, says drummer Robby, “it’s time to make art a threat to inspire action.”

Threatening, indeed. Make your way to one of the act’s live gigs, and as Robby tells us, you just might catch an angry band on stage. And perhaps a bit more. “Our friend from Tygers of Wrath just said ‘organized chaos,’” he adds, “and we like that.”

Such chaos erupted when Robby and guitarist/vocalist Nick—both originally from other bands—aimed to launch a ska-punk group influenced by Operation Ivy. The pair eventually recruited friends Jehiah on the four-stringer and Corbin as its second guitarist and today’s incarnation of Subvert was born.

The band’s newest release is We’ll Make More than Noise, an EP that’s finally ready after a nine-month gestation period, which will be available for purchase via Subvert’s MySpace site. The variety of tracks stem from the band’s wide breadth of influences, both musical and non-musical.

“The fact that we each come from different musical backgrounds, and have been inspired by different people and different situations in the world, past and present, shows the diverse unity we all share,” says Robby. “From politics to religion to social issues to mere musical genres, it all affects us, just as much as it should affect everyone in the world—you just have to allow it to do so.”

And some of their gigs have a lasting effect, including one remote date with the earlier-noted Tygers and Bob Barker Bloodbath. “It was in the middle of the desert with a generator, far away from civilization,” says Robby. “We played in unitards, leotards and Speedo-like biker shorts. ‘Nuff said.”
