Isn’t it about time to enjoy your joystick in public? We think so and so do the folks behind the Radio Control Expo (RCX), and so they’re organizing fleets of model-size cars, aircraft, boats and other vehicles at the Fairplex in Pomona this weekend. If you could stick a receiver in it and control it with a hand-held transmitter, it’ll probably be spinning doughnuts here on a custom-built track. All you closet hobbyists will have plenty to reckon with here. Have you ever harbored a fancy to design a balsa-wood glider? They’ve got build-your-own programs that’ll take you back to the first time you learned the wonders of the lithium battery. The motors will be small, but the excitement will be large-scale with a two-day expo featuring very grown-up toys, including the Southwest Armour Group (1/6 scale WWII tanks bellowing smoke and engaging in a little car-crushing spectacle), micro planes zipping around your head, a huge outdoor pond for nitro boats and what the expo peeps are calling the “Sizzling Supercross Race,” an invitation-only event featuring the top RC trucks and buggies careening around a 10,000-square-foot outdoor track. Then when you’ve had your fill of Mini-Me vehicles, you can catch the Model Airplane News Expo and the International Die Cast X Collectors Expo where all your Hot Wheels fantasies will come true. Now that’s handheld action!
