Pompadours. Check. Watch chain. Check. Chrome bumpers from here to Barstow. Check-check. The Latino Student Union’s 3rd Annual Rockabilly Festival scheduled at Pitzer College this weekend will be a celebration of Chicano artistic expression, custom car culture (or “Kustom Kulture” to use the correct lingo) and music of course. If the likes of Von Dutch, Ed Roth and Robert Williams is your cup of scented petrolatum, then the Aztec and lowrider imagery and barrio art to be showcased here will definitely chrome the inside of your carburetor. And speaking of carburetors, the classic cars, custom vehicles and hot rods on display here are guaranteed to get you hot under the zoot suit collar. There’ll be trophies for car show participants and awards for Best Pompadour, Best Female Hairdo, Best Rockabilly Couple and Best Pachuco so you might want to make sure your jar of Tres Flores is fresh. Oh, don’t forget the tunes. Get inspired to pick up an upright bass with tunes from the likes of The Wiseguys, Moonlight Trio, Gamblers Mark, The Sugar Daddys, The Southerners and Johnny Come Lately.
