Couwenberg Exhibition

Posted May 20, 2010 in

First the bad news: This batch of new work by Alex Couwenberg was the last exhibition mounted at the OBJCT Gallery in Pomona. Insert tear-stained hankies here. But here’s the good news: Couwenberg’s works have been moved over to the other OBJCT Gallery space in Claremont and will call this place home for most of next month. This exhibition is just the latest feather-in-the-cap by this contemporary abstractionist who once did a stint as a freelance illustrator to pay for his tuition at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and cites SoCal culture (hot rods, skateboarding, et al.) as a source of inspiration. Couwenberg recently put on a show at Kathryn Markel Fine Arts in New York City—but us locals will be able to get a taste of the Hard Edge Abstract Expressionism that made this artist such a luminary much closer to home. Reveling in lozenge-like shapes and forms, the works that make up this current show radiate a level of refinement and symmetry that further underscores Couwenberg’s penchant for artistic discovery and exploration.

Alex Couwenberg exhibition at OBJCT Gallery Claremont, 536 W. 1st St., Claremont, (909) 621-0125;, Thru June 27.
