For those times when you’re reaching for an Allman Brothers CD . . . but then you start leaning towards that Hatebreed song on your Zune—well, that’s where Maylene & The Sons of Disaster come in. Taking the groove of Southern rock’s finest (with just a dash of boogie) and the Christian-core heaviness of He Is Legend, this Alabama-bred metallic act has been making worship-worthy mosh pits since the band formed circa 2004. Named after a famous criminal gang—Ma Barker and her sons—and warning evildoers about “divine justice,” Maylene has been far from idle—logging in endless tour hours with Underoath, Norma Jean, The Glass Ocean and Haste the Day and releasing III—the band’s third album—last year, a release that made a small splash when the single “Just a Shock” landed on the Billboard 200. And just so you know that the band’s tuneage is brutal enough for the tough-guy crowd, Maylene song “Step Up (I’m on It)” was a recent theme for WWE Bragging Rights. This Saturday, the band is part of the Scream the Prayer III Tour that also counts A Plea For Purging, Blessed By a Broken Heart and The Crimson Armada in the lineup. Yeah, sometimes a blessing can make your ears bleed.
