Spiderworks charmed Riverside in much the same way that The Breakfast Club’s bad boy character John Bender appealed to Molly Ringwald’s prissy princess Claire. The band has spent much time screaming angrily and riffing technically for attention instead of whispering into the ears of eager metal heads and rockers alike since the group formed in 1988 (remaining together on and off ever since). In the ’90s, a much more experienced Spiderworks seduced Riverside further with its heavy melodies and atmospheric sounds—only to rip out its heart and tear it to pieces shortly afterwards when the band disbanded without so much as a goodbye or a kiss. Since 2001, a Spiderworks concert has become rarer than Lindsay Lohan without a booze-monitoring anklet. But they’re back on—this time performing at Romano’s Concert Lounge in Riverside along with Pretty Neato and The Sleeping Sea King. Spiderworks, night after night, countless diehard fans cried themselves to sleep (or fired up a bowl) listening to your classic Shiver while you were aching for your aggressive yet psychedelic love. Now, after years of on-again, off-again, you expect us to just pick up where we left off and hold you in your arms? As the wise John Bender once said to Claire, “Sweets, you couldn’t ignore me if you tried.”
