Although Mexican Independence Day has already passed, don’t pack away your red, white and green just yet . . . the mariachis are in town! Get your Mexican pride on, or just enjoy an afternoon of vibrant, passionate music at the 5th Annual Mariachi Festival at Fairmount Park in Riverside. There will, of course, be mariachis (sombreros and all) and ballet folklorico performers as well as food and crafts representing Los Estados Unidos Mexicanos. This ain’t Arizona, folks, so feel free to wear your Brown Pride T-shirts and show off your Aztec calendar logo or your kids with Mixtec names. The festival is all about cultural traditions and heritage, but that doesn’t mean it’s not in tune with progressive times—among the mariachi performers is the acclaimed Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles, the first all-female mariachi ensemble in America. Yell and dance with the audience, grab some food while taking a stroll through the park and enjoy the energetic strumming of that good ol‘ guitarrón. And don’t forget to say gracias to the city’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department.
