While they may be a bit removed from the grungy sound that made them one of the biggest names in ’90s rock, Stone Temple Pilots have consummated their return with a full-on tour in support of their latest album, May’s Stone Temple Pilots (their first since 2001’s Shangri-La-Dee-Da). At one point, frontman Scott Weiland was to rock as Robert Downey, Jr. was to Hollywood: a consistent punchline, drug-addled fodder for an often ruthless press. But just as RDJ rose from the proverbial ashes and embarked on what would become an otherworldly comeback, fighting every step of the way from the gutter to Iron Man, Weiland has kicked his own habits and recorded the third sober album of his ten-disc-spanning career (the others being STP’s 1992 debut, Core, and Velvet Revolver’s 2007 sophomore release, Libertad). The grizzled rock veterans and their ever-flamboyant lead singer will be bringing the heat to the desert at the end of this month with a show Saturday at Indio’s Fantasy Springs, so make sure to creep on out to the show and witness a comeback of truly Rourkian proportions.
