There is perhaps no group darker, no group more inherently sinister based on appearances alone than Dimmu Borgir. Arguably one of, if not the most mainstream act of the recently-revived wave of symphonic black metal, the Norwegians have even graced the oft-dreaded airwaves of MTV (cue gasp) when their song “Progenies of the Great Apocalypse” (off of 2003’s creatively-titled Death Cult Armageddon) was tapped as the theme for 2004’s Battle for Ozzfest. Talk about sleeping with the enemy. Needless to say, it was significantly more acceptable when Dimmu Borgir members Silenoz and the no-longer-with-the-band ICS Vortex lent their vocal talents to no less than four episodes each of Adult Swim’s Metalocalypse. No need to worry about any mainstream infiltration this time around, though; Dimmu Borgir is coming to Pomona’s Fox Theater, so between them and supporting acts Enslaved, Blood Red Throne and Dawn of Ashes on what is being called the “Darkness Reborn” tour (presented by Fangoria and Decibel magazines), there is hardly a chance your beloved corpse paint will come within a stone’s throw of, say, a 3OH!3 hat or a Lady Gaga T-shirt. Perish the thought.
