Dancing on the Ceiling

It’s said that “those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” Well, we may not always learn from the past, but we sure as hell can’t escape it anytime soon, from the looks of things. Nothing is or will ever be as popular as the concept of retro, and if we are doomed to repeat the past, we will assuredly be repeating countless retro movements, trapped in an endless loop of VH1’s I Love the… series. To that end, Dancing on the Ceiling is currently at Fontana’s Tibbies Center Stage through January 23rd, featuring various hits from the ’70s and ’80s. Interestingly enough, the event’s synopsis promises that the show will “have you searching the attic for your 8-tracks and cassette tapes,” but these days, a more applicable retro reference might be to VHS tapes and compact discs (you mean you could only fit 15 songs onto this thing? It’s bigger than an iPod!) To be totally fair, though, the most popular aspects of pop culture usually survive for good reason; the trailer for Dancing on the Ceiling begins with a soulful refrain from Queen’s “Somebody to Love,” so at least the folks at Center Stage are working with a more than decent set list.
