Wet Dreams

You know what they say, if you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself. With that said, San Jose-based, self-professed progressive R&B/rock duo, Happy Body Slow Brain is rockin‘ it like Ken Jennings—I’ll take obscure similes for 500, Alex—but I digress.

Led by fluid melodies as cool and meditative as a still ocean bound for change; full phrases mixed with rampant wakes give these tunes a flexible feel. With Matthew Fazzi and Isaac Bolivar switching things up on the keys and strings, and road warriors filling things out on the drums and bass, Happy Body Slow Brain must’ve been paying attention when their papa told ’em, “Be electric.”

After Taking Back Sunday decided to return to their original lineup, Fazzi and Bolivar were let loose and given the opportunity to explore and expand upon the catalyst. Once they got someone to kick in some Latin beats the rest was history . . . in the making.

With a DIY mindset, the guys of Happy Body Slow Brain, in the coveted position of conducting things their way, named themselves as they saw fit. “We wanted a name that encompassed the intensions of the music, not something like Cannibal Corpse that yells a genre,” Fazzi explains. “We wanted something electronically moody and sleepy like a meditative trance without suggestion.”

What started as a once-dormant idea has now been synthesized into a 13-track album entitled Dreams of Water. Produced by Marc Jacob Hudson, Dreams of Water was about “keeping it fun . . . We just wanted a record we could listen to and be like, yeah, this is exactly what we wanted to listen to at the moment,” Bolivar said in an online interview.

As it were, there is more than just laughs and beer pong when you decide to be your own boss.

“We’ve been waiting for the opportunity to write our own record and not have to answer to a label . . . But when you have to wear a lot of hats, it can be overwhelming,” Fazzi explains. “I’d like to be putting all my energy into the music side of things, but when you do it yourself everything’s out of pocket.”

With creative autonomy and an existential approach, Happy Body Slow Brain is free to move at whatever speed they see fit, and it would appear that they have set a steady pace while on the road.

After spending some time in the Big Apple the guys are taking a line out of Biggie’s songbook and in the next few days are going back to Cali. Though they won’t necessarily be sippin‘ booze up in the House of Blues, they’ll be jammin‘ at a number of SoCal venues over the next month (including a stop Wednesday at The Wire). So if you’re down for a shot, a few brews and some solid grooves, feel free to kick your feet up and chillax with a happy body and a slow brain.
