Young Frankenstein
By: Lynn Lieu
Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein comes to life as a musical at the California Theatre of the Performing Arts. Based on the 1974 movie starring Gene Wilder, the play centers on Dr. Frederick Frankenstein, a descendant of the infamous Dr. Victor Frankenstein from Mary Shelley’s titular novel. This young Frankenstein is embarrassed by his grandfather’s legacy and tries to disassociate himself from it by insisting his surname be pronounced Fronk-en-steen. The parody starts when he inherits his family’s estate in Transylvania and spirals into a whole new chapter about the Frankenstein bloodline. (Lynn Lieu)
