It seems as if every time we walked into a local coffee house a few years back, there it was—that piano-pop rock ballad hit of Denver-based The Fray being played overhead on the stereo. We don’t even know what the song’s called, but we’re suckers for a good melody.

THE HOT L BALTIMORE
No, that’s not a misspelling—just picture a neon “hotel” sign with the “e” burned out. In fact, a wrecking ball’s on the way to tear down the condemned building as a group from America’s underclass gathers to make the best of it, though their lives are on failure’s edge.

Patrick Murray has made a name for himself in reggae by way of Pato Banton. “Pato” (meaning “wise owl”) is a nickname his stepfather gave him. And “Banton” comes from the DJ slag for “heavyweight DJ.” The England native who has recorded over a dozen full-length records since 1985 and worked with dub-meister Mad Professor is currently touring the U.S., making a stop in Chino of all places.

This looks to be a Cal League Baseball High Desert challenge of sorts, as the actually-named High Desert Mavericks (representing the city of Adelanto in San Bernardino County; MLB affiliation: Seattle Mariners) square off at home against their Los Angeles County-based neighbors to the west, the Lancaster Jethawks (MLB affiliation: Houston Astros).

Schneider’s probably best known for his small- and big-screen comedic appearances, including his successful stay on NBC’s Saturday Night Live in a variety of guises and characters, or on film, as the lead character in the Deuce Bigalow movies. But this event is part of Schneider’s return to where it all started for him, as a stand-up comedian.
