Larger bands seem to be increasingly popular for music production these days: The more members participating, the more diverse the sound becomes, resulting in a unique combination of talents (which is what music needs: less copycats and more new sounds). That’s where Green Monkey comes in. With the recent addition of a sixth member as a DJ/keys player this is a band with the infectious sounds of alternative rock that is ready to be shared.
“The meaning behind the name symbolizes our message that the world is in a current state of de-evolution. People have become too dependent on technology and have lost their primal edge,” says drummer AJ Mindiola.
Here’s looking at you people who would rather ask your phones questions than manually looking it up on Google. Although Green Monkey’s name suggest aggressive primal instinct, the music isn’t the dangerously head-banging type. Persistence has allowed Green Monkey to successfully created its own label. “Instead of relying on an outside management company to book and promote shows, we decided to build an alliance with other local IE bands in order to produce numerous energetic live events in the IE,” says bassist Mike Mindiola. It’s nice to see a band from the music community working for that community.
The upcoming show for Green Monkey isn’t just another gig, it’s a huge opportunity for the band. “We are currently nominated for RawArtist Musicians of the year,” says AJ proudly. “This upcoming show will showcase the best Raw bands on the West Coast as voted for by the fans and Raw judges. The winner will then go on to face the East Coast representative with the eventual winner being named 2011 Rawards Musicians of the Year.”
Fans of Green Monkey will be happy to know that there is no slowing down the band’s determination. “We love performing on stage and feel this is where we can continue to develop our identity. As soon as our CD is released, we’ll get right to work on new material. We don’t believe in taking breaks and pride ourselves in being committed to this band and each other.”
