Traditionally, American Craft Beer Week starts on May 14, but why wait? On May 12, Hangar 24 kicks off its ACBW celebration early with its 3rd Annual Homebrew Competition. Judging brews against standards set forth by the Beer Judge Certification Program, head brewer Kevin Wright says, “Each of the past two years, we have received about 250 entrees. The beers have encompassed the entire BJCP lineup of styles. We have been very pleased with the caliber of beers that we get for the competition.” The Redlands brewery, built next door to the old airport, has been churning out brews not just for the Inland Empire, but throughout all of Southern California since its inception in early 2008. Hangar 24 rounds out the week with a beer release, live music, the return of some old brews, twin cast night, a barrel roll tasting day and a special homebrew demonstration. So, who cares if it’s a little early? . . . It’s gotta be May 14 somewhere in the world.
