For the Love of Chocolate

Tis’ the season to give in to your chocolate indulgence. Unfortunately, it’s also the season for overspending and commercialized Valentine’s Day candy. Retailers like Target and Walmart can suck an everlasting gobstopper for all I care; it’s the perfect time to buy some gourmet chocolates and not pre-packaged, dried up pieces of fudge. Logan’s Candy is a local favorite, mainly because the shop has been serving Ontario since 1933. Just to be clear, that’s 80 years of making chocolate and candy.

The shop is a sweet fantasy-turned-reality. Shelves are covered with all sorts of candies and the only thing separating guests from the delicate chocolates is a glass case that showcases these little beauties. All I could think about upon entering the store is the hope for music to cue from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (the 1971 version, not that Johnny Depp nonsense). Owner Jerry isn’t quite the singing type but he definitely has a knack for making candies of all sorts. As I arrived, he was busy in the back room making a thick, sweet batch of Chocolate Mint Fudge.

Word of mouth alone makes this place a famed candy destination but you might have seen it around elsewhere too. In December the shop was featured on an episode of Storage Wars regarding the authenticity and pricing of an old ribbon-candy maker from the ’30s (Season 3, Episode 26 for those who want to check it out). How’s that for IE coverage?

After tasting a scoop of fresh, warmed Penuche Fudge, I couldn’t leave without a thick order of the caramel-colored, sugar-coma inducing treat. It sits on the high throne of sweetness but there’s also a unique flavor within that comes from a very soft hint of maple. Commence salivation.
